Taking this seriously

Writing
As you can see, posting has dramatically increased as of late here on my blog. This site has been ignored it for too long. I've always said, even as much as I love creating software for a living, my first love has always been reading and writing.

I'm a big believer in the fact that most people's personalities are hard wired early and those same traits cause a sort of natural selection of success in certain professions later in life. Despite this, if I could have picked my career path, I would have chosen to become a successful writer.

With this in mind, every expert in the field say the only way to become a writer is to write. No brainer, right? Up until this point, I've never taken this line of thought to heart and actually attempted something meaningful. To that end, this space will be my publicly broadcast practice grounds.

Writing on this site will entertain this itch but I don't have illustrious illusions of grandeur. My plans are simple: I just want to write better, mostly for writing's sake alone. That said, this ability should accent my current career in software engineering, as most engineers are relatively deficient communicators at best.

I had wanted to write this post a week ago, but rather than empty words and no action, I insisted on starting the trend I intend to follow in the future before stating it; one of my goals this year is to at least post something original to this blog once a day whether I have an audience or not. We'll see where this takes me from there.

Paradigm Switches

Sometimes in life, you just need to switch things up. You realize you've been doing things either just a little less efficiently or outright wrong and you just need to make a jump into something different... I hit this point over the last year and finally had the guts to make a major change. Yes, I bought a Mac Book Pro. Some background: I've been a Windows (and DOS before that) user since roughly the 5th grade (that would be 1984/1985-ish, eeek) and part time Linux user on and off since 1994.  Other than two years in college, I've used those platforms (and a little Solaris) exclusively -- that's 25 years of experience.  Twenty-five years of learning shortcuts, time savings, and overall comfort on a computing platform. All that experience, shaken up and shelved for now.  Well, sorta.  This is what I think so far: Pros: I LOVE the hardware.  Seriously. Dual video cards (one for low power, one for high performance) Upwards to 8 hours of battery life...
