I've been debating for a long time whether to replace my 2 year old (mid-2009) 17" MacBook Pro with a new laptop but have struggled with what my next machine should be.
I know I'll go back to a Mac - I've had a great experience in both hardware and software. The recently announced features of OS X Lion, I'm even more convinced that I like Apple's direction rather than Ubuntu's (Unity/Gnome 3) or Google's (Chrome OS) direction in desktop operating systems. I have been saying for years that nothing can replace the experience of native applications combined with cloud-based storage is the most logical path to the future. And no, I don't think the latest HTML5 craze will solve the deficiencies in webapps.
So what hardware should I be looking at? I waffle between the power of desktop solutions and the convenience of a portable computer. The more I think about it, the more I like the flexibility of a laptop and this is most epitomized by the MacBook Air.
Hence the title link. The previous generation was the first Air to actually be usable as a primary computer for everyday tasks but really falls short as a development machine due to lack of memory expansion. According to this article, the new sandy bridge Airs will not only sport faster processors, but much larger memory options. This is key and really gets me excited.
I'm keeping my eyes open for this hardware refresh which I am expecting at some point this month.
